A Message From Our Executive Director

Andrew P. Mandell – MR. DIABETES®
May 2009

There’s a lot going on in the world of diabetes.  I am pleased to see a big emphasis on the self management of the disease, an emphasis that has been growing steadily during recent years.  I am proud to say that Defeat Diabetes Foundation has been leading the way in this effort, and we continue to encourage other groups and organizations to join us in this fight.

DDF conducts a variety of programs each year to promote awareness, prevention and early detection of the disease.  We also focus on the consequences of undiagnosed and/or poorly managed diabetes and provide accurate, up-to-date and practical information on the treatment and self-management of diabetes.

In the process of fulfilling our advocacy for the improvement of the lives of all diabetics, we continually seek out like-minded individuals and companies to support.

There are “good guys” out there – many of them. Here, I will profile one such company who serves as a business model for all businesses.  Other businesses would do well to learn about this company and improve their own relationship(s) with their own customers.  I’m talking about a diabetes supply company:  American Diabetes Wholesale, Inc. (ADW).

Chris McGuire is the CEO of ADW and operates on the principles of fair, honest, friendly and reliable service.  ADW is six years in business and has a family of thirty-five employees.

DDF and ADW began a relationship during the last year.  In that time they have demonstrated a compassion for their constituents rarely seen in business. During that time they have participated in several events by contributing to our Defeat Diabetes® Programs with both time and money, and have donated hundreds of glucometers to DDF for distribution.  In the process we have determined them to be a welcome addition to this war against diabetes.  They are sure to be a major force in the future, and, so, we are proud to support them.

This past weekend, ADW held their 2nd annual Diabetes Educator of the Year Award ceremonies in Boca Raton, Florida.  There were attendees from all over the United States. The three finalists, of course, were the focus of this event.  They were:  Joyce Malaskovitz, PhD, RN, CDE; Suzanne Swann Laws, MS, RD, LD, CNS, FADA, BC-ADM, CDE; and Laurie Terrio, RN, BS, CDE.

These three finalists were selected from amongst a huge number of nominees, all great contributors to this war against diabetes.  These finalists each enjoyed a public review of their individual contributions, and suffice to say that each one is remarkable.  Joyce Malaskovitz, from Las Vegas, Nevada was awarded First Place.

Other notables in attendance were: Marlene Koch, RD., author of many cook books and frequent guest on QVC.  Her newest book is Marlene Koch’s 375 SENSATIONAL SPLENDA RECIPES.  For more information on Marlene –  Then, there was 24 year old international race car driver AND a Type 1 diabetic, Charlie Kimball.  Race car fans will know that Charlie is a Formula One driver and has won races on three continents.  Charlie gave a very moving speech.

There was, also, Chris Thomas, the Diabetic Rockstar, a Type 1 diabetic making his presence known in New York City. And I, too, was present representing Defeat Diabetes Foundation.  The Master of Ceremonies was Joel Connable, NBC-TV CH 6 news anchor and, himself a Type 1 diabetic.  Also, there were many more people who came in from all around America to share in this wonderful moment of accomplishment for the three nominees, network with other top professionals and exchange valuable information.  It was a most rewarding gathering and I am honored to have been included in this special program.  Can’t wait to see what the ADW Team will do for an encore next year.
