MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH
Stroke is no joke!! People with diabetes are 4-6 times more likely to suffer a stroke than those in the general population. In fact, 2 out of 3 people with diabetes will actually die from stroke or heart disease. Strokes are the No. 3 cause of death in the United States.
What is a Stroke?
Stroke is a condition that affects the arteries leading to and inside the brain. A stroke occurs when one of the blood vessels to the brain is either blocked by a clot, or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.
I’m not going to describe the various types of stroke. Suffice to say there are several, and none of them are good. You should learn the different types, the risk factors and how to recognize them. And know that every second counts when you are having a stroke; you MUST get the blood flowing to your brain ASAP, as the blood carries the oxygen your brain needs to live. The good news is that strokes are largely preventable. It’s a matter of lifestyle. You MUST see a diabetes specialist every 3 months – medical oversight. You MUST eat a diet rich in anti-oxidants, high fiber and more – proper nutrition is critical. You MUST incorporate regular exercise into your daily activities – fitness is essential to avoid stroke. **But, before beginning ANY exercise regimen, you must first consult w/ your doctor to discuss any limitations you may have, whether you know about any limitations you may have – or not. Good Health.
