Health Care Reform and What We Can Do For Ourselves

It is becoming more and more apparent that our national health care system is collapsing all around us.  Greed and corruption is running rampant in all segments of our society and, in spite of all our protests to correct the problems, the powers that be seem to be turning a deaf ear to our demands and needs.

I'm talking about the guardians of the systems which are supposed to protect us:  the insurance companies, the pharmaceutical companies, the hospitals, the banks, Wall Street and, most especially, our elected officials in all levels of government - but, especially, our Congressmen and women, our Senators and, dare I say it, maybe even President Obama, who has yet to assert himself to deliver on his campaign promise of 'true' health care reform.

Over 65% of Americans have clearly stated they want a 'public option' in health care insurance.  With that many Americans supporting a 'public option' it means this is well beyond being a partisan issue.  Make no mistake about it, our leaders are well aware of what the citizenry wants, already.  Therefore, they have a personal agenda(s) that seems to be dictated by the lobbyists of greedy corporate America.  And, unfortunately, it appears that these forces of self-interests might win this war.

Over the past year this battle has reached an unprecedented level of discussion.  But, this conversation has been going on since the days of President Harry S Truman, and there have been significant public wins (Medicare and Medicaid in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson).  But now it’s time to go forward once more and protect all of our citizens.  And, to be sure, there may be many legitimate reasons to consider compromise and different ways to accomplish this.

However, there is an overwhelming absence of legitimate argument.  Instead, what we're hearing is a lot of brilliant (and not so brilliant) mind misdirection.  Our politicians lie about 'death panels', government funded abortions, etc.  They encourage disruptions at Town Hall Meetings designed for the public airing of legitimate concerns.

And, frankly, these masters of misdirection introduce more 'red herrings' into the news and on talk shows than we can possibly follow.   Meanwhile, our health is suffering - along with our pocketbooks.  So, to save ourselves, what is it we can do, besides write letters and make phone calls?  THIS......

As diabetics we live with a chronic health condition.  We cannot afford to wait for our “leaders” to come up with a solution that may never come!  So, we must TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN HEALTH!!!

Diabetics have extreme health issues which will never go away - there is no cure.  (Researchers are working on finding a cure but, until that time, we have to rely on other methods.)  We can, however,  certainly minimize the tragic effects of our condition by following some simple and basic rules:
1)  see your doctor regularly [an endocrinologist or diabetes specialist];
2) eat properly [5-9 servings of fruits & veggies, whole grains and legumes, daily]; and
3) exercise [always after getting an okay from your doctor in order to know your limitations].

What I have just described in the above paragraph is the best health advice anybody and everybody should follow, diabetic or not.  Diabetes is both a medical condition and a metabolic disorder (which, in most cases, created the medical condition).  So, for the diabetic, it is absolutely necessary to subscribe to these basic rules in order to survive.

As for the rest of society, if everybody lived as if they were diabetic, by following these simple rules we would see an end to a majority of all disease.  This is because the diabetic lifestyle is the most perfect lifestyle a human being could possibly follow.

CONCLUSION:  if you truly want to put a stick in the spokes of the wheel that is the corporate self-interest(s) controlling our costly and ineffective health care system, then LIVE LIKE A DIABETIC!!

BIG BONUS
When you adopt these simple rules you automatically protect your children and other family members from developing Type 2 diabetes and/or other diseases and conditions.

Good Health.

And remember:  'What's worse than finding out you have diabetes?...NOT finding out!!!'
