Defeat Diabetes® E-Lerts™ Newsletter

August 2005
(Volume IV, Issue 8)

Could summer have gone by so quickly? Are the kids already back in school or just about ready to start? We at Defeat Diabetes Foundation hope that during these months you have been able to pick up some new and better lifestyle changes and will be able to continue them once the hectic schedule returns.

We have lots of great information to share with you this month. In Latest News - Self-Management - Food you'll find foods and supplements that will help lower blood sugar, blood pressure and help lose belly fat.

In our Latest News - Self-Management - Knowledge section, you will learn information that may help you or members of your family to avoid pitfalls of diabetic complications. Plus you'll find the best kind of socks to protect your feet.

In Latest News - Government, there are three articles that show how two European and one United States city are actively trying to intervene and help with care, research, or prevent diabetes. Maybe we can learn from these programs and pressure our own state and federal legislators to get more involved.

In honor of those first few days of the school year, let us make it easier for you with some great tasting, healthy recipes that your kids will love. In addition to great recipes by Jyl Steinback, America's Healthiest Mom, and Duke University's Diet and Fitness Center's recipes, we welcome Sensational Stevia Desserts recipes, by Lisa Jobs.

From Mr. Diabetes® about The Mr. Diabetes® Wake Up and Walk® Tour: Since my last report I've been in three states, met with many government officials, I've spoken to quite a few different groups and have been inspired by so many whom I meet. Some of the highlights of the past month were at Camp Ho Mita Koda, the oldest camp for diabetics in the United States, visits with the Seneca Nation, meeting and speaking at different Curves, Diabetes Support Groups and Medical facilities and much, much more. This is a long update so here goes...

Theresa Garnero, APRN, BC-ADM, MSN, CDE, has made us laugh again in this month's Islets of Humor. Theresa just returned from the American Association of Diabetes Educator national conference held in our nation’s capital, and "I thought about how diabetes can also be overwhelming, and how sometimes people say they don’t feel like they stand a chance in this epidemic—but you do!" Read about how diabetes is being fought in this month's DIABeducation.

Looking for delicious diabetic-friendly dessert recipes?  Then you’ll want Sensational Stevia Desserts, by Lisa Jobs, a new cookbook featuring desserts using stevia, the all-natural alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners. The foreword is by Andrew P. Mandell, Executive Director, Defeat Diabetes Foundation.

There is so much going on in the research world, so this month's Treatments on the Horizon is especially exciting. It includes: artificial pancreas, new diabetes genes, new drugs, new testing devices without drawing blood and an injection that makes you feel full.

There are some exciting changes that are coming soon at Defeat Diabetes Foundation. Stay tuned.

Good Health,

New government research shows the number of teenagers with type two, or adult-onset diabetes is skyrocketing: Doctors said almost all teenagers with type two diabetes are overweight. Studies have shown that complications typically show up 15 years after diabetes sets in. That means teens with the disease may deal with the effects years earlier, at age 25 or 30, instead of age 60 or 70.

White chocolate isn't really "chocolate" at all because it contains only the fat from the cocoa bean and other non-chocolate ingredients. So it's important to choose white chocolate chips or baking bars that contain only the cocoa butter as the "fat" ingredient. Avoid products that are all sugar, hard vegetable fat and have artificial chocolate flavoring.

Overcoming the Heat
If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing the heat and humidity of a blazing summer’s day in Washington D.C., consider yourself lucky—it’s overwhelming. It feels like you don’t stand a chance to walk just one more block to the shelter of an air-conditioned room.

As I return from the American Association of Diabetes Educator national conference held in our nation’s capital, I thought about how diabetes can also be overwhelming, and how sometimes people say they don’t feel like they stand a chance in this epidemic—but you do!

Over the past week, I rubbed elbows with an army of nearly 5,000 diabetes educators from across the globe and heard pearls of wisdom about how we are fighting this disease. May these insights bring you respite from the intensity of diabetes: Read more
