''In the next 10 years, 80 percent of all heart disease will be due to type 2 diabetes."
That must be an error - it should read that 80% of all diabetics would have heart disease, right? Not according to Dr. David Heber, Director of UCLA's Center of Human Nutrition. ''It's a chain from obesity to diabetes to heart disease," said Heber.

Type 2 diabetes and heart disease are physiologically linked. What's more, according to new government figures, a whopping 64 million Americans now have what's called Metabolic Syndrome, or insulin resistance, a condition that doubles their risk of heart disease and raises their diabetes risk by 30 percent. Our Latest News - Heart Disease section looks at the connection between diabetes and heart disease.

People with diabetes have even greater risks of complications under certain circumstances. Ischemic stroke risk increases with abnormal fasting plasma glucose. Type 2 diabetics on long-term insulin therapy have a greater risk of colorectal cancer. Mental function is impaired during blood glucose spikes. Read more in Latest News - Complications.

Vitamin D is needed for insulin to be released effectively and Indian curry leaves could control the amount of glucose entering the bloodstream. Read more in Latest News - Self Management.

Happy Halloween! Before your children go out Trick or Treating, you want them to eat something that is healthy,  will fill them up and will make them less susceptible to temptation. Here are some great Diabetic Recipes for you: six one-dish meals prepared either in a slow cooker, in the microwave, in a toaster or on the stove top from Jyl Steinback's Countertop Magician.

Autumn is a beautiful time of year of many colors and of leaves falling from the trees. I am always amazed how Theresa Garnero is so timely with her Islets of Humor.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. If you would like some of our Defeat Diabetes® Screening Test brochures (now available in Spanish) to distribute to friends and family, please contact us at ScreeningTest@DefeatDiabeates.org with your request.

Do you like to follow recipes? A recipe is merely a formula for success. It requires measuring, following certain steps, taking a little more care in creating something wonderful so you can pretty much guarantee the outcome. In this month's DIABeducation Theresa Garnero gives us the Recipe For Diabetes Health.

What does a computer chip that is implanted under the skin for use in helping doctors quickly access a patient's medical history and a nasal spray that could relate to a loss of 50 pounds a year have in common? They are both this month's Treatments on the Horizon.

In this month's Readers' Forum we discuss an enormous safety and environmental concern: a mail back disposal system for diabetic syringes. Have you heard about the dark discoloration that is a sign of diabetes - especially in our children? We explain this condition in our second reader's question.

Mr. Diabetes®, Andy Mandell, has just left Tomah, Wisconsin, where he had memorable experiences. He met with the Oakdale Lions Club and attended the Lions Club Regional Council Meeting. He also received his first key to any city from Tomah Mayor Chuck Ludeking. read more  5901.1 miles and counting... (Wonawoc, WI)

November 2, 2004 is a very important day in the United States. There are many issues on a national level that make this particular election so important:  safety and security, the economy, personal freedoms and rights, medical research and the environment. There are many differences between the candidates for our highest office.

We have the freedom and the privilege to exercise our right to vote. Many peoples in the world do not have this luxury and many have fought to obtain or keep it. Whatever your beliefs, we urge you to express them by voting on November 2, 2004.

Good Health,

Recipe For Diabetes Health
Do you like to follow recipes? A recipe is merely a formula for success. It requires measuring, following certain steps, taking a little more care in creating something wonderful so you can pretty much guarantee the outcome.

We have the recipe for diabetes health! We know the numbers and actions needed to prevent and in some cases, reverse complications typically associated with uncontrolled diabetes. So, how are we doing? According to information shared during the annual American Association of Diabetes Educators in August 2004, less than 2% of people with diabetes have the four main ingredients for diabetes health. read more

FDA Approves Chip Implant That Can Prevent Treatment Errors A computer chip that is implanted under the skin won U.S. approval for use in helping doctors quickly access a patient's medical history.
New Nasal Spray Hopes to Reduce Caloric Intake By 30 Percent That could relate to a loss of 50 pounds a year? The drug makes stomach feel full. PYY, whose full name is Peptide YY 3-36 Nasal Spray, is based on a hormone made by the intestines that travels through the bloodstream to the brain, telling it that the body is full about 30 to 45 minutes after a person starts eating.

Did You Know?
Cinnamon seems to lower blood glucose... triglycerides... and LDL cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes. Researchers speculate that cinnamon increases insulin sensitivity. This improves both glucose and lipid metabolism. They're using 1 to 6 g/day of Cinnamomum cassia...the most common type of cinnamon used in the U.S. This works out to be about one-half teaspoonful a day... sprinkled on cereal, coffee, or other foods. Cinnamon capsules are also being marketed on the Internet... but these may contain different types of cinnamon. If patients want to try this, recommend monitoring blood glucose...and adjusting diabetes meds if needed. J Agric Food Chem 2004;52:65-70.
