Defeat Diabetes® E-Lerts™ Newsletter

November  2003
(Volume II, Issue 10)

Happy Thanksgiving! Yes, it's that time of year and with a little bit of planning diabetics can ENJOY the holidays. Know your diabetic meal plan, focus on a diabetes self-management goal, fix nutritious recipes ahead of time and put exercise on your schedule. We have a great article in our Latest News that helps diabetics deal with holidays.

We have great traditional and non-traditional holiday Recipes from Jyl Steinback, America's Healthiest Mom, that you will absolutely LOVE!!! You won't believe that they are diabetic, low-fat and lower carb too!

Did you know that there are new guidelines for diagnosing Pre-Diabetes that increases the number of American Pre-Diabetics to at least 22 million? We are also highlighting 2 articles about young adults with diabetes: Generation D and Early Diabetes - Early Heart Disease.

The Glycemic Index (GI) or GI - one of the most talked about topics in nutrition today - ranks foods based on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels over a 2 hour period is gaining acceptance as a dietary tool. And weight management may be the most important therapy for obese individuals with type 2 diabetes, for physical reasons and also depression improves with weight loss.

Defeat Diabetes Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Mr. Diabetes® Achievement Award. The award, which consists of public recognition and a cash prize will be given to a diabetic or diagnosed pre-diabetic individual or group for work that contributes to the knowledge, awareness and/or prevention of diabetes. for more information

Read about the further adventures of Mr. Diabetes®, Andy Mandell, on his Wake Up and Walk® Tour.

Our Readers' Forum consists of REAL questions that come into Defeat Diabetes Foundation. We do not dispense medical advice, but we do thoroughly research each answer before we respond.

We are very excited about 3 Treatments on the Horizon: Donor spleen cells save diabetic mice; a new fiber fat substitute, no calorie, "Z-Trim" will be available soon; and a new drug mimics HDL, "good cholesterol", to clear coronary arteries in 2 weeks.

WE NEED YOUR HELP to continue our highly recognized and well received programs, but we would like to do more. The Defeat Diabetes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Our web site is secure and all donations are tax-deductible.

Good Health,

Weight Management a Therapeutic Priority for Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Weight management may be the most important therapy for obese individuals with type 2 diabetes, according to a recent American review. Obesity and weight gain are important risk factors for the development of diabetes and can significantly influence the outcome for those already diagnosed with the disease. Obesity is also a known risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), which is responsible for 70% to 80% of deaths in diabetics.
Glycemic Index Gaining Acceptance as Useful Dietary Tool The glycemic index or GI - one of the most talked about topics in nutrition today - ranks foods based on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels over a 2 hour period. Foods with a low GI can result in a modest rise and fall in blood sugar, which helps provide lasting energy. "Growing evidence suggests that moderating the glycemic response of foods may have important health implications."

America's Severely Obese Growing Faster Than Moderately Obese
Severely obese Americans are the fastest growing segment of the nation's overweight population, rising twice as quickly as those who are moderately obese. Archives of Internal Medicine 2003; 163: 2146-2148.

Generation D: Young Adults with Diabetes Until recently, type 2 diabetes and heart disease have affected older adults almost exclusively. But the obesity epidemic in America is now putting younger adults at risk for life-threatening diseases that were once rare in those under age 50. But over the last decade, type 2 diabetes—formerly known as adult-onset diabetes—has increased by 70 percent in adults aged 30 to 39, reflecting, researchers say, the 70 percent increase in obesity in adults aged 18 to 29.
Early Diabetes Leads to Early Heart Disease  The ever-increasing waistlines of young adults in the U.S. have led to more and more cases of type 2 diabetes in young people -- and these young people are having far too many heart attacks and strokes, new research suggests. In the study, young adults -- younger than 45 -- with type 2 diabetes were many times more likely to have a heart attack than their peers who did not have diabetes. The increased risk was most pronounced in women.
Depression Improves With Weight Loss Severe obesity is associated with a high risk for depression, especially those with diabetes and among young women with poor body image. However, depression improves with loss of weight.

Treatments on the Horizon
Donor Spleen Cells Save Diabetic Mice  A specially bred strain of mice develops diabetes similar to the type 1 form of the disease that afflicts humans. Now scientists have shown that injections of live, donor spleen cells from healthy non-diabetic mice into these diabetic mice leads to permanent reversal of the disease, even in animals with end-stage diabetes.
New Fiber Fat Substitute - No Calorie ”Z-Trim” Available Soon A new no-calorie fat substitute is being tested in several food laboratories, and the product's maker hopes it could eventually be used to slash calories in everything from cookies to burgers. Z-Trim, an insoluble fiber that goes through the body without being digested, was invented by a government scientist. It's intended to replace some of the fat, including unhealthy trans fat, found in processed foods.

Readers' Forum
Q - I'm 15 years old and I think that I have diabetes. Me and my mom are going to the doctor in a few weeks so that I can get a check up and see. I have been noticing new dark spots around my neck and underarms. At first I thought it was a lack of cleanliness but from TRUE FACTS, I am quite positive that that is not what it is! I am about the cleanest person that you could meet. I am writing to you to tell you that I'd like to know if you all have brochures of early awareness of diabetes or anything that might help me out.
As I previously mentioned my mom is going to take me to the doctor to get a check up but sad to say, my mom isn't the most responsible person that I know. She does understand that this is a very serious issue but work has always came first in this house. I'd like to know as soon as possible if I have diabetes or if there is anything signs that I should be watching out for or if there is important things that I should know.
Thank you very much for taking time to read this letter, I greatly appreciate it. - Roxann - for our answer

Q - In the Defeat Diabetes® Screening Test, www.DefeatDiabetes.org/screeningtest.htm, I believe your response omitted a very possible cause of the itching, that is a yeast infection.  Diabetics are more prone to yeast problems than the general population.  Yeast loves a high-glucose environment.  Consequently, yeast infections frequently plague diabetics. In my opinion, yeast should be mentioned when the subject of itching is raised, especially by a diabetic.  - Alice - for our answer
