DIABETES CAN BE PREVENTED!!!
That's right! 75% of all Type 2 Diabetes
can be avoided if steps are taken early enough. I mean that literally -
STEPS. One of the best ways to stave off diabetes is through EXERCISE
and one of the best exercises is WALKING.
This issue of E-Lerts™ is dedicated to the benefits of exercise for Diabetics and Pre-Diabetics. Exercise reduces risk of heart disease and total mortality. But exercise is also good for your mental health as well. We've also included some exercise precautions during these hot summer months. See Latest News.
There are some exciting new Treatments on the Horizon including Alcohol is good for you? and a dog's nose can sniff out diabetes? Also there are new treatments for Diabetic Neuropathy and increasing fiber consumption can help treat Pre-Diabetes. Plus a new Diabetes Model: treating diabetics in a group setting leads to more effective care.
Mr. Diabetes® was presented a Proclamation in Eugene, Oregon on July 9 which will now be know as Diabetes Awareness Day. In Salem, Oregon on July 14, Mr. Diabetes® was again presented with a Proclamation. July 14 is now and forever Defeat Diabetes® Day. read more
We have some quick, no-cook Recipes for when it's too hot to turn on the oven or even the stove from Jyl Steinback, America's Healthiest Mom.
Our Readers' Forum depends on your input and questions. I want to thank all of you who have participated. We can only publish 2 - 3 questions each issue, but I appreciate all of you who have written and hope you will continue to do so.
Thanks to our many supporters the Defeat Diabetes Foundation is able to provide critical information for children and their families. So far we have sent over 1,302,745 screening tests to over 2441 schools in the United States free of charge. Check out our schools program. WE NEED YOUR HELP to continue our highly recognized and well received programs, but we would like to do more. The Defeat Diabetes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All packaged food
sold across America will have to carry labels indicating trans-fatty acid
content under new US government regulation. "This is just the beginning of a lot
more rules and regulations about (nutrition labeling). We are moving now very
rapidly, " Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson told a news
conference. The new requirement takes effect January 2006.

Walk Away From
Diabetes Risks Walking not only lowers the
risk of developing lifelong diseases like diabetes, but a new study shows
it can cut the chance of dying in half for people who already have diabetes.
Uplifting! - Raising Spirits Through Exercise
It's no
secret that exercise is good for
you. On an almost regular basis, people with type 2 diabetes hear the rhetoric
that exercise and weight loss will all but cure them of their condition.
Innumerable studies have shown that physical exercise can improve not only
your physical health but your mental health as well.

Walking Less Then 20 Minutes A Day! Reduces Risk of
Heart Disease 61%
Moderation is the key to sustaining exercise. Those
spending less than an hour a week of physical activity during their free time
were 15 per cent less likely to develop heart problems compared to those who
took no activity. Those spending between one and two hours in physical
activity had a 40 per cent reduced risk and those who spent more than two
hours had a 61 per cent reduced risk.
Keep Your Cool While Exercising in Summer Heat
Feeling the "burn" is a part
of exercise many people enjoy. If you're not careful, the combination of heat
and exercise could turn your workout into a serious medical problem. When you
exert yourself, muscle activity leads to an increase in body temperature. Your
body maintains its internal temperature by sweating. But your body's natural
ability to cool itself can be overwhelmed by the combination of intense
exercise and hot weather.

Diet and Exercise Reduces CVD Risk in Pre-Diabetics
Follow-up

(DPP), showed that diet and exercise can be more effective
than pharmacologic therapy at warding off cardiovascular disease in patients
with impaired glucose tolerance.

Treatments On The Horizon
Diabetes and Drinking
Moderation in alcohol ingestion may save a diabetic's life.
Ethanol overdosage is the leading cause of death due to
low blood sugar in the United States. In addition to low blood sugar, alcohol
can cause other problems as well. The good news is that studies have shown
that consumption of two glasses of red wine with a meal did not seem to affect
sugar levels in a group of type 1 and type 2 diabetics.
Effective Treatments Available for Diagnosed Diabetic
Neuropathy
Without a
cure, intensive
glucose control and pain management are the most effective
treatments for slowing disease progression and improving quality of life.
Early diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy is
crucial in order to prevent chronic ulcers, amputation and other related
complications.

Regular exercise
benefits the heart, muscles, bones, and even the brain. New evidence from the
University of California suggests that being aerobically fit - having a
healthy heart and lungs - may reduce the mental decline that can occur in
older adults. The findings are published in a recent issue of the Journal
of the American Geriatrics Society.

A Dog’s Nose For Sniffing Out Signs Of Diabetes….Can It
Replace The OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test)?
Technology
based on a dog's ability to smell can detect a range of
illnesses, including diabetes, cancer and schizophrenia. Smell is an important
indicator of well- being, and has been used as a diagnostic tool since ancient
times. The e-nose is non-invasive, quick and apparently accurate (the lung
cancer patients were diagnosed in a minute). The technology is based on the
olfactory model of dogs, known for their acute sense of smell (the human nose
is too blunt an instrument).
Treating Pre-Diabetes with Increased Fiber Consumption
To Prevent Diabetes
The results of
a study support evidence that a high intake of dietary fiber
is associated with enhanced insulin sensitivity and therefore may have a role
in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
New Diabetes Model: Treatment in a Group Setting
We're learning that
people who are living with a chronic
condition really require an approach to medical care that
is different than the acute care model.” Now doctors and nurses at a Eugene
medical clinic are trying a new model for diabetes management: treating
diabetics in a group setting. Studies have shown that diabetics who
participate in group visits reported improvement in their blood sugar levels,
improved quality of life and diabetes knowledge compared with patients who
received conventional diabetes care.
