Blood Glucose Monitoring Pre and Post Surgery Is
Cost-Effective
posted 04/22/04
Researchers have found monitoring blood sugar of diabetes
patients before and after surgery protects their health and does not increase
costs.
The researchers, from Penn State University, said patients whose glucose is
continually monitored after coronary bypass artery graft surgery do not require
higher medical costs despite the additional testing.
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is a standard treatment for advanced
coronary disease in people with diabetes. In the procedure, surgeons remove
veins from the legs or arms and use them to create a bypass around a blocked
coronary artery. As many as 25 percent of CABG procedures on U.S. adults are
performed on diabetics.
Death and risk of deep wound infections are higher in patients with diabetes who
undergo CABG surgery than in those without diabetes. But evidence suggests the
poor outcomes are due in part to too much glucose in the blood. Diabetic
patients who were monitored continually were compared to 81 patients with
diabetes who underwent CABG surgery who were cared for using conventional
methods, with glucose monitoring every four to six hours.
The first group showed significantly better blood sugar control than the
conventional group, researchers said.
