Veterinarian Bill Warning Over Obesity
posted 01/20/03
More than 2.5 million cats and dogs are overweight and could
cost their owners over £1bn in vet bills.
According to insurer Direct Line, one in five owners say their pets are fed too
much and need more exercise.
Obesity can cause heart and joint problems as well as other long-term illnesses
including diabetes.
Based on Direct Line's own experience, the cost of treating problems such as
these is around £400, almost twice as much as the average vet bill.
However, some problems can last for the rest of the pet's life resulting in
bills which can run into thousands of pounds.
Worryingly, only one eighth of the UK's 14.5 million dogs and cats are actually
insured.
