Glucose Concentrations at Alternative Sites are Similar Except For…….
posted 04/25/03

Blood glucose monitoring at alternative sites is consistent with fingertip results in the fasting state and 120 minutes after eating but not at 60 minutes after eating or after exercise.

A group of investigators led by Dr Dawn Bina of the International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis, USA, compared the concentration of blood glucose measured at the forearm, palm, thigh and fingertip in 86 patients with type 2 diabetes.

Measurements were taken in a fasting state and at 60, 90 and 120 minutes after eating. They were also taken after 15 minutes of exercise.

The investigators found that the concentration of blood glucose was significantly different at alternative sites compared with the fingertip at 60 minutes after eating (p=0.0003) and exercise (p=0.037). At 60 minutes after eating, the difference in the concentration of blood glucose was –8.8+10.8% at the forearm and –13.7+10.7% at the thigh, compared with the fingertip. After exercise, the difference was 19.1+19.1% at the forearm and 15.6+22.6% at the thigh. Measurements in the palm were similar to the fingertip at all time points. The investigators found no significant difference in the concentration of blood glucose at alternative sites in the fasting state or at 90 minutes and 120 minutes after eating.

The investigators conclude that evaluating concentrations of blood glucose at alternative sites is consistent with fingertip results in the fasting state and 120 minutes after eating but not at 60 minutes after eating or after exercise.
