Antibiotic Can Cause Hypoglycemia
posted 04/05/04
Biaxin, (clarithromycin) commonly used antibiotic may lead to
dangerously low blood glucose (sugar) levels in certain people.
If you take a sulfonylurea and your doctor wants to prescribe clarithromycin,
tell your doctor about these cases. Any time you´re prescribed a new medication,
ask your pharmacist whether the drug is known to affect blood glucose levels and
how often you should check your glucose levels while on the new medication.
Even if the new medication is not known to affect blood
glucose levels, it would be wise to check more frequently for the first several
days you’re taking any new medication. And any time you have an infection, are
sick in bed, or are vomiting, check your blood glucose and urine ketones at
least every two to four hours.
