A protein once thought to be worthless is showing an increasing amount of success in reducing complications associated with diabetes.
In early animal studies, researchers found the protein C-Peptide can reduce the development of kidney disease in type 1 diabetics. Now, Anders Sima, M.D., of Wayne State University, in Detroit, says the research continues to show promise. On the basic science level, he says, they are getting a better understanding of why C-Peptide works.
Additionally, Dr. Sima told Ivanhoe Broadcast News that small studies conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden show very good results.
Dr. Sima and colleagues are currently talking with the National Institutes of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation about funding additional clinical trials in the United States.
