Doctors Ignore Simple Way To Help Diabetes Patients
posted 01/15/03
Physicians often do not use a simple technique that would improve how well patients with diabetes manage their disease, researchers report. Making patients with diabetes recite doctor instructions could help them remember what their physicians say during visits. However, the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center study of 38 physicians and 74 patients found in only 20 percent of visits did doctors use an interactive technique. Only 12 percent of the time, when new concepts were introduced, did physicians test patient recall. Researchers said interactive techniques, as simple as making patients repeat instructions, do not make visits longer but could help patients understand bottle labels, dosing schedules and educational brochures.
