New Insulin Treatment For Canine Diabetes
posted 05/05/04

Government approves first insulin for diabetic dog

(Washington-AP) -- There's a new weapon to fight doggie diabetes.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved its first-ever canine diabetic treatment.

Before today's announcement, veterinarians would treat diabetes in dogs using human insulin. But the F-D-A says human insulin isn't compatible with a dog's metabolic system.

The new treatment -- called Vetsulin -- is derived from pigs. It will be available in the U-S this summer, with a veterinarian's prescription.

It's been sold under different names in 20 other countries.

Diabetes strikes one out of every 200 dogs, often between theages of seven and nine, and more often in female dogs than males.
