bullet Higher Prevalence Of Urinary Incontinence In Patients With Diabetes (09/29/03) Patients with diabetes showed a significantly higher incidence of incontinence, which was reported in 31.0% of diabetics compared to 23.2% of non-diabetics. The higher prevalence of incontinence was observed at all ages and even
when data were adjusted for weight. Further analysis also determined that patients with severe diabetes that required insulin medication showed a greater incidence of incontinence than patients with mild or no diabetes.
bullet Diabetic Eye Disease: Low Vision Basics (09/29/03) Low Vision refers to persons who have sub-normal vision as a consequence of congenital or acquired eye disease, as well as to the eye care and rehabilitative specialty that helps those individuals maximize whatever remaining vision potential they may have.
bullet Nomogram Predicts Disability In Adults With Diabetes (09/29/03) Primary care physicians use a new one-page nomogram to easily predict the
risk of physical disability for adults with diabetes with this new Clinical
assessment tool.
bullet Cry the Fingerstick Away! Blood Glucose Monitors Obsolete (09/29/03) Glucose levels in tears correlate well with blood sugar levels and can be used routinely in monitoring glycemic control. The method is very cheap and hence may have a role in community screening programs of diabetes with very little expense.
bullet Exercise Plus Weight Loss Reduces Blood Pressure in Syndrome X Patients (09/19/03) A program of exercise and weight loss is an effective treatment for hyperinsulinemia and significantly reduces diastolic blood pressure in patients with syndrome X.
bullet New Peptide Reduces Appetite (09/19/03) The hormone tells the brain that you are full and cut appetite by 1/3rd. In the study, both obese and lean people ate about 30 percent less after they were given a dose of PYY. The research also showed lower natural levels of PYY in the obese, which may explain why they are hungrier and overeat.
bullet Effects of Blood Pressure Level on Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy (09/19/03) Baseline SBP (Systolic Blood Pressure) is a stronger predictor than DBP (Diastolic Blood Pressure) of renal outcomes in those with nephropathy resulting from type 2 diabetes. Those with the highest baseline PP (Pulse Pressure) have the highest risk for nephropathy progression but also garner the greatest risk reduction with SBP lowered to less than 140 mm Hg.
bullet Food Pyramid Redesigned to Reduce U.S. Waistline (09/18/03) The U.S. government will refashion its Food Guide Pyramid to help overweight and obese Americans eat less and exercise more.
bullet Infants of Diabetic Moms at Risk for Heart Defects (09/18/03) Babies born to diabetic mothers are five times more likely than other infants to have heart defects. The prevalence of infant heart defects in the diabetic group was 3.6 percent, while the prevalence in the non-diabetic group was less than 1 percent.
bullet Diabetes Incidence Jumps 50 Percent in Past 10 Years-Obesity Rates Climbing (09/18/03) In a recent ADA survey, an alarming 59 percent of these individuals who were obese or overweight maintained they were not at personal risk for diabetes. Even though more than half of overweight or obese respondents knew that being overweight/obese was a leading risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.
bullet FDA Eyes Diabetes Warning Antipsychotics (09/18/03) Federal regulators have asked the makers of a widely used class of six antipsychotic drugs to include labeling language about a possible link with diabetes. The FDA letter recommends patients using the so-called atypical antipsychotics be monitored for blood-sugar abnormalities, particularly if they have risk factors including obesity and a family history of diabetes.
bullet Islet Cell Transplants Cure Diabetes Without Immunosuppression Drugs (09/18/03) Advantages over current treatment with adult kidney-pancreas transplants include unlimited tissue availability and freedom from the requirement for immunosuppressive agents. It is likely to be better than stem cell transplantation because anlagen can differentiate, grow and produce insulin without manipulation of cells in culture or addition of specific growth factors.
bullet Men’s Macho Attitude In US Adds To Diabetes Deaths (09/16/03) All over the world -- except in the U.S. -- diabetes death rates are dropping. But men die of diabetes twice as often as women. All over the world, diabetes is on the rise. But also on the rise is awareness that keeping to a strict diet and a strict treatment regimen keeps diabetes under control.
bullet Regular Exercise Beats Back Diabetes After 40 (09/16/03) The insulin sensitivity of younger people remained higher four days after exercising. But no increase was recorded in the middle-aged and older participants. Frequent and regular workouts are necessary for people over age 40 who want to prevent or control diabetes if they want to get the full benefit of that exercise.
bullet Full-time Cast AIDS Healing of Diabetic Ulcers (09/16/03) Diabetics often develop skin ulcers on the bottom of their feet, and if these sores do not heal properly, amputation may be required to save the patient's life. A new study shows that while wearing a cast full-time on an affected foot aids ulcer healing and can prevent such drastic outcomes, many subjects don't wear the cast as directed.
bullet Light Drinking Fights Metabolic Syndrome (09/16/03) A glass or two of wine a day may actually lower a person's risk of metabolic syndrome, a condition that raises the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Researchers say the findings add to previous evidence that shows drinking moderate amounts of wine can offer a variety of health benefits, especially for the heart. But those benefits quickly evaporate once drinkers begin to overindulge.
bullet Fish Oil Cuts Fat In Diabetic Patients' Blood (09/16/03) Fish oil supplements may help reduce some fatty substances in the blood of people with diabetes, but not others, researchers report.
bullet Older Male Diabetics Have Better Risk Factor Control than Women (09/16/03) Elderly men with diabetes have better control of blood pressure, lipid levels, and hypoglycemia than older female diabetics, despite nearly similar drug treatment.
bullet Addition of Rosiglitazone (Avandia) to Metformin Provides Benefits in Patients Previously on Other Combinations (09/16/03) "Treatment with rosiglitazone plus metformin decreased blood glucose levels in patients previously on metformin and significantly reduced insulin resistance, a core defect of type 2 diabetes. Treatment with rosiglitazone plus metformin also offered advantages over a sulfonylurea-metformin combination regimen since it was associated with a lower risk of hypoglycemia."
bullet New Evidence Shows CP (Chromium Picolinate) Lowers Blood Sugar in Poorly Controlled Insulin-Treated Patients (09/16/03) New Clinical Trial Adds to Body of Evidence Showing Chromium Picolinate Lowers Blood Sugar in Insulin-Treated People with Poorly-Controlled Type 2 Diabetes. Two chromium picolinate research presentations showing similar effects on blood sugar levels were also presented at the IDF Congress.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that diabetes rates crept up from an estimated 8.2 percent of adults in 1988-94 to 8.6 percent in 1999-2000. That is an increase of less than 5 percent.
